Jeff Garlin Heads Back To Chicago For His First Netflix Comedy Special

For most of his storied career, Jeff Garlin has principally honed his craft as a comedy actor in titles like Dr. Katz, Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm and, most recently, The Goldbergs. Though, as fantastic as the Second City alum is at developing and playing the many television and films roles he has embodied, his first – and longest – act is stand-up.

Which is why longtime comedy fans should be rejoicing. On Thursday, Garlin announced that his first-ever comedy special, Our Man in Chicago, would debut Tuesday, November 12th exclusively on Netflix. The 57-year-old Chicago native shared the news on his Instagram account.

“November 12th. That’s when my Netflix special debuts,” he says in the video. “It’ll run for the rest of time because that’s what happens on Netflix. So, I want you to watch it but at your leisure. Whenever you want to watch it! Just watch it and I hope you dig it.”

Filmed in Chicago on the 37th anniversary of his comedy debut, Garlin’s Our Man will display his signature blend of storytelling and improvisational comedy. The hour will, among other things, consist of his own strolls down memory lane and frequent digressions into the personal lives of the live audience members.

After all, this isn’t a standard hour of stand-up comedy. Then again, considering just how well-known Garlin’s penchant for improv is, the crowd likely knew what they were getting into.

“I have no preparation whatsoever. Except, I may think, ‘Oh I’ll talk about that tonight,’” the comedian told Joe Rogan in a 2018 interview. “I may bring up a story I’ve told before but I have no idea. Literally, when I step on stage I have no idea what I’m going to talk about.”
